Eyes cannot encompass Him, and He encompasses all eyes. And He is the Knower of every detail, the Most-Aware.[1]

Commentary

[1]

The understanding of this verse is of great importance, as many matters of creed are linked to it. In brief, note that “اِدراک” means to become aware of all the limits and dimensions of a visible object whilst knowing something from beginning to end. For example, ‘from head to toe’ is used to refer to the complete dimension of a human. Most exegetes explain “اِدراک” as “encompassment”. Only an object with limits and dimensions can be encompassed. Allah Almighty is pure from limitations and dimensions, and hence it is impossible to encompass Him. However, beholding Allah Almighty is possible and its occurrence for the believers on the Day of Judgement is proven. This is a core belief of Ahl al-Sunnah.
