Al Anam

HR Background

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

So whomsoever Allah intends to guide He opens his chest for Islam,[1] and whomsoever He decides to misguide, Hemakes his chest tight, most constricted[2] as if he were ˹forcibly˺ ascending into the sky. In this way, Allah casts punishment upon those who disbelieve.

Commentary

[1]

The word ‘شَرْح’ means to expand and ‘شَرْحُ الصَّدْر, i.e. expansion of the chest, is interpreted as Allah Almighty creating light in the heart of an individual to the extent that his every deed is in accordance with the will of Allah Almighty.

[2]

The “tightness of the chest” may refer to a liking for disbelief and disliking of Islam, or being disinclined to do righteous deeds and eagerness to sin.
