Al Baqarah

HR Background

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

And remember when We commanded the Angels to prostrate to Ādam, so they all prostrated except Satan (Iblīs).[1] He refused and expressed arrogance[2] and became a disbeliever.

Commentary

[1]

The angels performed a prostration of reverence (not worship) before Prophet Ādam عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام and this was done by actually placing the forehead on the ground, not by merely lowering the head slightly.

[2]

This account reveals the dangerous nature of arrogance; in some cases, it may lead to disbelief (kufr), and so every Muslim should refrain from arrogance.
