وَ اِذْ اَخَذْنَا مِیْثَاقَكُمْ وَ رَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ الطُّوْرَؕ-خُذُوْا مَاۤ اٰتَیْنٰكُمْ بِقُوَّةٍ وَّ اذْكُرُوْا مَا فِیْهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُوْنَ(63)

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

And remember when We took an oath from you, and We raised Mount Sinai (al-Tūr) above your heads, ˹and said,˺ “Hold fast onto this ˹Book˺ which We granted you, and bear in mind that which has[1] been stated therein with this hope that you may become pious.

Commentary

Here, there is an apparent compulsion to fulfil the oath; remember, there is no compulsion in embracing faith; however, after accepting the religion, one is obligated to adhere to its laws. Let this be understood through the example of how a government does not force an individual to enter its country, but when one does enter, the government does compel him to abide by its laws.
