Here a severe warning is expressed for the one who is stingy while spending in the way of Allah Almighty when it is religiously necessary (wājib). Miserliness is generally defined as withholding wealth where it is religiously or customarily necessary to spend. It is religiously necessary to spend money to pay zakat and the Sadaqah Al-Fiṭr (usually paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer); spending on family and friends is customarily necessary. Most Quranic commentators have said that this refers to withholding zakat payments as not fulfilling a customarily necessary element does not incur this warning.
