English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

Muslims should not befriend disbelievers instead of believers; and whosoever does this has no bond with Allah except if you fear something from them. And Allah warns you of His Wrath. And to Allah is the return.[1]

Commentary

[1]

Friendship with disbelievers is unlawful; making them confidants and forging a close bond with them is also prohibited. However, if there is a genuine danger to life or wealth, then one may only maintain apparent ties; meaning, there is permission for apparent ties but not concealing one’s faith and making deceit part of creed or faith. In fact, even in the case of permissibility, it is better to firmly oppose falsehood without the fear of death.
