HR Background

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

So, ˹Dear Beloved Prophet,˺ whosoever argues with you regarding ʿĪsā, after the knowledge that has come to you, then say, “Come forth, let us call our sons and your sons, and our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves, then let us imprecate the curse of Allah upon the liars (among us).[1]

Commentary

[1]

Mutual imprecation (mubāhalah) generally refers to two parties supplicating in such a way where one says, “If you are upon truth and I am upon falsehood, then may Allah destroy me; and if I am upon the truth and you are upon falsehood, may Allah destroy you!” This statement is then repeated by the other party. Mutual imprecation should only take place for definitive matters of the religion, not speculative issues; a mutual imprecation can occur to prove the truthfulness of Islam but not issues of jurisprudence between schools of thought.
