Al Imran

HR Background

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

And from the People of the Book, there is one who, even if you entrust him with a pile ˹of wealth˺, will return it to you ˹in full˺; and from the very same people there is one who, even if you entrust him with a single gold coin (dīnār), will not return it to you unless you remain standing over him. This (deceit) is because they say, “We will not be held accountable for the illiterate.” And they knowingly ascribe lies to Allah.[1]

Commentary

[1]

To take the wealth of another through deceit and oppression is unlawful even if he belongs to another faith. On the night of Hijrah (migration), the Beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم tasked Sayyiduna Ali کَـرَّمَ الـلّٰـهُ وَجْـھَـهُ الـکَـرِیْم with the duty of returning entrusted items even to those who intended to kill the Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. If only our Muslim brothers considered whether their conduct adheres to the Prophetic way or the way of others. Generally, Muslims seem to have lost their credibility in the world.
