And We blessed him and Isḥāq; [1] and from their offspring, some are virtuous and some clearly wrong themselves. [2]
Commentary
[1]
Every type of religious and worldly blessing was bestowed upon Prophet
Ibrāhīm and Prophet Isḥāq عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام. One noticeable blessing is abundance in the offspring of
Prophet Ibrāhīm عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام; many Prophets عَـلَـيْـهِمُ وَالـسَّـلَامwere sent amongst them between
the time of Prophet Yaʿqūb عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام and Prophet ʿĪsā عَـلَيْـهِ
الـسَّـلَام.
[2]
From the offspring of these two are those who do good by accepting faith
and those who wrong themselves by disbelieving. This points to how just because
someone’s father has many virtues, it is not necessarily the case that the son
will also be the same. It is the will of Allah Almighty that sometimes a pious
person is born to pious parents, at times an evil person to evil parents and
sometimes a pious person to an evil person. This is in order to establish that
children not being virtuous is not a flaw of the forefathers, and forefathers
not being virtuous is not a cause for shame for their offspring.
