Luqman

HR Background

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

And We certainly granted Luqmān wisdom: [1] “Show gratitude to Allah!” Whosoever expresses gratitude, so he expresses gratitude for himself. And whosoever shows ingratitude, then indeed Allah is Infinitely Independent, Most-Praiseworthy.

Commentary

[1]

There is a difference of opinion about whether Sayyidunā Luqmān رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ is a prophet or not. The majority of scholars are of the opinion that he was a wise man, but not a prophet. The general meaning of wisdom is intelligence, understanding, and insight. It has been used in the Quran for other meanings, such as knowledge, forbearance, tolerance, prophethood, and judiciousness. The scholars have also defined wisdom in numerous ways; one definition is that wisdom is that which Allah Almighty places in the intellect and resultantly, the intellect becomes illuminated and it acquires an understanding of what it observes. A great way of attaining it is through acting upon knowledge.
