واتبعوا ما تتلو الشياطين على ملك سليمان ۖ وما كفر سليمان ولكن الشياطين كفروا يعلمون الناس السحر وما أنزل على الملكين ببابل هاروت وماروت ۚ وما يعلمان من أحد حتى يقولا إنما نحن فتنة فلا تكفر ۖ فيتعلمون منهما ما يفرقون به بين المرء وزوجه ۚ وما هم بضارين به من أحد إلا بإذن الله ۚ ويتعلمون ما يضرهم ولا ينفعهم ۚ ولقد علموا لمن اشتراه ما له في الآخرة من خلاق ۚ ولبئس ما شروا به أنفسهم ۚ لو كانوا يعلمون

اَلْبَقَرَة

Al Baqarah

وَ اتَّبَعُوْا مَا تَتْلُوا الشَّیٰطِیْنُ عَلٰى مُلْكِ سُلَیْمٰنَۚ-وَ مَا كَفَرَ سُلَیْمٰنُ وَ لٰـكِنَّ الشَّیٰطِیْنَ كَفَرُوْا یُعَلِّمُوْنَ النَّاسَ السِّحْرَۗ-وَ مَاۤ اُنْزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَیْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوْتَ وَ مَارُوْتَؕ-وَ مَا یُعَلِّمٰنِ مِنْ اَحَدٍ حَتّٰى یَقُوْلَاۤ اِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلَا تَكْفُرْؕ-فَیَتَعَلَّمُوْنَ مِنْهُمَا مَا یُفَرِّقُوْنَ بِهٖ بَیْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَ زَوْجِهٖؕ-وَ مَا هُمْ بِضَآرِّیْنَ بِهٖ مِنْ اَحَدٍ اِلَّا بِاِذْنِ اللّٰهِؕ-وَ یَتَعَلَّمُوْنَ مَا یَضُرُّهُمْ وَ لَا یَنْفَعُهُمْؕ-وَ لَقَدْ عَلِمُوْا لَمَنِ اشْتَرٰىهُ مَا لَهٗ فِی الْاٰخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَاقٍ ﳴ وَ لَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْا بِهٖۤ اَنْفُسَهُمْؕ-لَوْ كَانُوْا یَعْلَمُوْنَ(102)

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

During the reign of Sulaymān, they followed the magic that the devils would read, but Sulaymān did not disbelieve;[1] rather, the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to two angels, Hārūt and Mārūt, in Babylon; both of them would not teach[2] until they had declared, “We are only a trial, so do not destroy your faith.” They (people) would learn magic from the angels through which they could create separation between man and his wife, and with this, they could not harm anyone without the will of Allah, and they were learning[3] something which would harm them and[4] not benefit them; and no doubt, they know that whosoever accepted this deal has no share in the Hereafter; and how evil is that for which they sold their souls; if they had ˹somehow˺ known.

Commentary

Some people accused Prophet Sulaymān عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلاَم of black magic. This allegation is refuted here.

[2]

Hārūt and Mārūt are angels, and all angels are sinless. The strange stories circulated about them were fabricated by the Jews and are lies.

[3]

Cause and effect are ultimately controlled by the Will of Allah Almighty; if Allah Almighty wills, fire will not burn, water will not quench, and medicine will not cure.

[4]

If magic can induce harm, then the verses of the Quran can certainly cure. Likewise, if disbelievers can harm others through magic, then the chosen people of Allah Almighty can certainly benefit people through saintly miracles.
