Al Baqarah

HR Background

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

O people! Eat from the earth that which is lawful (ḥalāl)[1] and pure,[2] and do not walk upon the paths of Satan; indeed, he is your open enemy.

Commentary

[1]

In Islam, the consumption of alāl (lawful) and the avoidance of unlawful is strongly emphasized; one can never become pious by earning unlawful income and then consuming it. Bribery, interest, theft, looting, etc. are all examples of unlawful income.

[2]

alāl and ayyib means lawful for consumption (like the meat of a goat, vegetables, lentils etc.) and it has been acquired in a permissible way (without bribery or theft).
