اُحِلَّ لَكُمْ لَیْلَةَ الصِّیَامِ الرَّفَثُ اِلٰى نِسَآىٕكُمْؕ-هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَّكُمْ وَ اَنْتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَّهُنَّؕ-عَلِمَ اللّٰهُ اَنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَخْتَانُوْنَ اَنْفُسَكُمْ فَتَابَ عَلَیْكُمْ وَ عَفَا عَنْكُمْۚ-فَالْــٴٰـنَ بَاشِرُوْهُنَّ وَ ابْتَغُوْا مَا كَتَبَ اللّٰهُ لَكُمْ۪-وَ كُلُوْا وَ اشْرَبُوْا حَتّٰى یَتَبَیَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَیْطُ الْاَبْیَضُ مِنَ الْخَیْطِ الْاَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ۪-ثُمَّ اَتِمُّوا الصِّیَامَ اِلَى الَّیْلِۚ-وَ لَا تُبَاشِرُوْهُنَّ وَ اَنْتُمْ عٰكِفُوْنَۙ-فِی الْمَسٰجِدِؕ-تِلْكَ حُدُوْدُ اللّٰهِ فَلَا تَقْرَبُوْهَاؕ-كَذٰلِكَ یُبَیِّنُ اللّٰهُ اٰیٰتِهٖ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ یَتَّقُوْنَ(187)

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

It has been made permissible for you to go to your women ˹to copulate˺ during the nights of fasting.[1] They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you; so now copulate with them and seek what Allah has ordained for you;[2] and eat and drink until the white thread from dawn (fajr) becomes distinct to you from the black thread (night);then complete the fasts until nightfall. And do not have intercourse with women (wives) while you are in the state of religious retreat (iʿtikāf) in the masjid.[3] These are the boundaries of Allah, so do not advance towards them. Thus, Allah clearly states His verses for the people that they may become pious.

Commentary

[1]

Rafath literally means to publicise matters that are usually kept private between husband and wife and not shared with others. Here, it means sexual intercourse.

[2]

One meaning of seeking “what Allah has ordained...” is that spouses copulate to acquire children so that the Muslim population increases and the religion is strengthened.

[3]

The verse states that it is lawful for spouses to have sexual intercourse during the nights of Ramadan as long as neither of them is performing the spiritual retreat; it is forbidden to have intercourse while in the spiritual retreat.
