وَ الَّذِیْنَ یُتَوَفَّوْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَ یَذَرُوْنَ اَزْوَاجًا ۚۖ-وَّصِیَّةً لِّاَزْوَاجِهِمْ مَّتَاعًا اِلَى الْحَوْلِ غَیْرَ اِخْرَاجٍۚ-فَاِنْ خَرَجْنَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیْكُمْ فِیْ مَا فَعَلْنَ فِیْۤ اَنْفُسِهِنَّ مِنْ مَّعْرُوْفٍؕ-وَ اللّٰهُ عَزِیْزٌ حَكِیْمٌ(240)

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

And those of you who die leaving wives should bequeath to their women provision for a year without expulsion ˹from their homes˺;[1] then if they leave of their own accord, you are not held responsible for what they do with themselves in accordance with the Shari‘ah; and Allah is Almighty,[2] Most-Wise.

Commentary

In the early days of Islam, the sitting period of a widow was a whole year. She would stay within her husband’s house and receive financial support. The ruling of one year became abrogated (2:234) and the maintenance for the whole year was later abrogated by the verse of inheritance (4:12).

This word can express different meanings like ‘esteemed’, ‘predominant’, and ‘almighty’.
