بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
Allah's Name to commence with, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
In the name of Allah, the Infinitely Gracious, the Most Merciful.
نٓ وَ الْقَلَمِ وَ مَا یَسْطُرُوْنَ(1)
Noon. (This is an individual letter of the Arabic alphabet; Allah and His Messenger know its exact meaning.) By the oath of the pen and of what it has written.
Nūn, by the Pen and what they write.
مَاۤ اَنْتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُوْنٍ(2)
With the Benevolence of your Lord, (O Beloved) you are not insane.
By the Grace of your Lord, you are certainly not insane.
وَ اِنَّ لَكَ لَاَجْرًا غَیْرَ مَمْنُوْنٍ(3)
And definitely for you is everlasting reward.
Surely, there is everlasting reward for you,
وَ اِنَّكَ لَعَلٰى خُلُقٍ عَظِیْمٍ(4)
And (O Beloved), your (excellent) character is undoubtedly of a superb standard.
and you possess an impeccable character.
فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَ یُبْصِرُوْنَ(5)
So, very soon you (O Beloved) will see and they too will see.
So, soon you will see and they will see too,
بِاَیِّكُمُ الْمَفْتُوْنُ(6)
That who amongst you was insane.
which of you was insane.
اِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ اَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِیْلِهٖ۪-وَ هُوَ اَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِیْنَ(7)
Indeed, your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His path, and He knows well those who are upon the path (of guidance).
Your Lord knows best the one who strayed from His path. He knows best those who are guided.
فَلَا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ(8)
Therefore, do not listen to those who belie.
So do not comply with the deniers.
وَدُّوْا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَیُدْهِنُوْنَ(9)
They are wishing this that in some way you may soften (i.e. compromise on religious issues) so they too might soften their stand.
They desired that you somehow show leniency so they can show leniency too.
وَ لَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِیْنٍ(10)
And do not listen to any excessive oath-monger, disgraceful person (i.e. Waleed Bin Mugheerah).
And do not obey every individual who is excessive in swearing oaths, humiliated,
هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِیْمٍ(11)
The excessive taunter going about excessively slandering.
openly taunting, frequently going back and forth as a slanderer,
مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَیْرِ مُعْتَدٍ اَثِیْمٍ(12)
The excessive hinderer of goodness; transgressor; sinner.
an ardent preventer of righteousness, a transgressor, a major sinner,
عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ زَنِیْمٍ(13)
With immoral character; besides all that, (he is) of an illegitimate birth.
harsh, and above all, illegitimate.
اَنْ كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَّ بَنِیْنَﭤ(14)
Because he has some wealth and sons.
˹Do not obey because he˺ has wealth and sons.
اِذَا تُتْلٰى عَلَیْهِ اٰیٰتُنَا قَالَ اَسَاطِیْرُ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ(15)
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, 'These are the stories of the earlier people.'
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “Tales of previous communities.”
سَنَسِمُهٗ عَلَى الْخُرْطُوْمِ(16)
We will soon brand him over his pig-like snout.
Soon We shall brand him on his pig-like snout.
