بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
Allah's Name to commence with, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
In the name of Allah, the Infinitely Gracious, the Most Merciful.
وَ السَّمَآءِ وَ الطَّارِقِ(1)
By the oath of the sky, and by the one that comes at night.
By the sky and by that which comes at night.
وَ مَاۤ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا الطَّارِقُ(2)
And have you understood what is the one that comes at night?
And what do you know about that which comes at night?
النَّجْمُ الثَّاقِبُ(3)
The very brightly shining star.
(It is) a shining star.
اِنْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ لَّمَّا عَلَیْهَا حَافِظٌﭤ(4)
There is no soul that does not have a guardian over it.
Every soul has a guardian appointed over it.
فَلْیَنْظُرِ الْاِنْسَانُ مِمَّ خُلِقَﭤ(5)
So, man should ponder what thing he has been created from.
So let man consider that from which he was created.
خُلِقَ مِنْ مَّآءٍ دَافِقٍ(6)
Created from a spurting (drop of) fluid.
He was created from a spurting fluid.
یَّخْرُ جُ مِنْۢ بَیْنِ الصُّلْبِ وَ التَّرَآىٕبِﭤ(7)
Which comes out from between the backs and the chests.
It comes forth from between the loins and chests.
اِنَّهٗ عَلٰى رَجْعِهٖ لَقَادِرٌﭤ(8)
Indeed, Allah is Able to return him (back to life).
Indeed, He is able to bring him back ˹to life˺.
یَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَآىٕرُ(9)
The Day when secrets will be examined.
The Day secrets will be tested.
فَمَا لَهٗ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ وَّ لَا نَاصِرٍﭤ(10)
So, mankind will neither have any strength nor any helper.
So he will have no power and no helper.
وَ السَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ الرَّجْعِ(11)
By the oath of the sky from which comes down the rain.
And by the sky which rains frequently,
وَ الْاَرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ(12)
And by the earth which opens up by it (i.e. the rain).
and by the earth which splits open.
اِنَّهٗ لَقَوْلٌ فَصْلٌ(13)
Indeed, the Qur'aan is definitely a decisive Word.
Indeed, it is a decisive Word.
وَّ مَا هُوَ بِالْهَزْلِﭤ(14)
And it is not (at all) a matter of amusement.
And it is not an amusing matter.
اِنَّهُمْ یَكِیْدُوْنَ كَیْدًا(15)
Indeed, the disbelievers carry out their (evil) scheme.
They are carrying out their plots.
وَّ اَكِیْدُ كَیْدًا(16)
And I (i.e. Allah) plan secretly.
And I execute My concealed plan.
فَمَهِّلِ الْكٰفِرِیْنَ اَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَیْدًا(17)
Therefore, give them some respite, give them some time (up until they were ruined in the battle of Badr).
So give respite to the disbelievers, give them some reprieve.
