Commentary

A mother endures three difficulties for her children which a father does not; carrying the child in her womb during pregnancy whilst bearing weakness after weakness, giving birth to the child, and then suckling it. It is for this reason that the mother has a three-fold excellence over the father. A hadith states: “A person asked, ‘Who is most worthy of my good conduct?’ It was said, ‘Your mother.’ He again asked, ‘Then who?’ It was said, ‘Your mother.’ He asked again, ‘Then who?’ It was said, ‘Your Mother.’ He again asked, ‘Then who?’ It was said, ‘Your father.’” (Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Bukhārī: 5971)

The status of parents is exceptionally lofty as Allah Almighty mentioned parents alongside Himself and gave the command to show gratitude to both. If someone does not serve his parents and instead he harms them, then this is his misfortune and deprivation.
