And if they strive to make you ascribe an associate-god ˹to Me˺ which you have no knowledge of, [1] then do not obey them andaccompany them in the world with kindness. And follow the path of the one who returns to Me ˹in repentance˺, [2] then your return is only to Me, so I will relate to you what you used to do.”
Commentary
[1]
It is rationally impossible for Allah Almighty to have a partner, therefore, whoever instructs someone to ascribe a partner to Allah Almighty, he will do so out of ignorance.
[2]
Even though serving parents is an important concept, they will not be obeyed in the disobedience of Allah Almighty. Rather, the command of Allah Almighty will be acted upon and only He will be obeyed. Therefore, if they order their child to commit polytheism or disbelieve in Allah Almighty, this instruction of theirs will not be carried out. Likewise, if they instruct their child to abandon an obligation or a necessary act like Salah, fasting, zakat, and Hajj or they compel him to shave his beard or commit a sin, there is no permission to follow their command.
