بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
Allah's Name to commence with, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
In the name of Allah, the Infinitely Gracious, the Most Merciful.
لَاۤ اُقْسِمُ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِ(1)
I swear an oath by this city (i.e. Makkah Mukarramah).
I swear by this city
وَ اَنْتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِ(2)
That (because) O Beloved, you are present in this city.
while you reside in this city.
وَ وَالِدٍ وَّ مَا وَلَدَ(3)
And by the oath of your father Ibrahim, and by his progeny; that is you (O Beloved).
And by the father and his progeny.
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ فِیْ كَبَدٍﭤ(4)
We have certainly created mankind to remain in hardship.
Indeed, We created mankind in hardship.
اَیَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَّنْ یَّقْدِرَ عَلَیْهِ اَحَدٌﭥ(5)
Does man think that no one will ever have power over him?
Does he think that none will ever have power over him?
یَقُوْلُ اَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًاﭤ(6)
He says, 'I have destroyed huge amounts of wealth.'
He says, “I have consumed abundant wealth.”
اَیَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَّمْ یَرَهٗۤ اَحَدٌﭤ(7)
Does man think that no one saw him?
Does he think that no one has seen him?
اَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَّهٗ عَیْنَیْنِ(8)
Did We not make his two eyes?
Did We not make two eyes for him?
وَ لِسَانًا وَّ شَفَتَیْنِ(9)
And a tongue and two lips?
And a tongue and two lips?
وَ هَدَیْنٰهُ النَّجْدَیْنِ(10)
And We guided him to the two conspicuous paths (of good and evil).
And We showed him two ways.
فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ(11)
Then he did not jump on the steep path without thinking.
So why did he not unwaveringly traverse the steep path.
وَ مَاۤ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُﭤ(12)
And what have you understood what the steep path is?
And what do you know of the steep path?
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ(13)
(It is) to free a slave.
Freeing a neck (life)
اَوْ اِطْعٰمٌ فِیْ یَوْمٍ ذِیْ مَسْغَبَةٍ(14)
Or the feeding on a day of hunger.
or feeding on the day of hunger
یَّتِیْمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ(15)
To an orphan (who is) the next of kin.
an orphan relative
اَوْ مِسْكِیْنًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍﭤ(16)
Or to a poor person lying in dust (i.e. afflicted with misery).
or a destitute person covered in dust.
