والوالدات يرضعن أولادهن حولين كاملين ۖ لمن أراد أن يتم الرضاعة ۚ وعلى المولود له رزقهن وكسوتهن بالمعروف ۚ لا تكلف نفس إلا وسعها ۚ لا تضار والدة بولدها ولا مولود له بولده ۚ وعلى الوارث مثل ذلك ۗ فإن أرادا فصالا عن تراض منهما وتشاور فلا جناح عليهما ۗ وإن أردتم أن تسترضعوا أولادكم فلا جناح عليكم إذا سلمتم ما آتيتم بالمعروف ۗ واتقوا الله واعلموا أن الله بما تعملون بصير

اَلْبَقَرَة

Al Baqarah

وَ الْوَالِدٰتُ یُرْضِعْنَ اَوْلَادَهُنَّ حَوْلَیْنِ كَامِلَیْنِ لِمَنْ اَرَادَ اَنْ یُّتِمَّ الرَّضَاعَةَؕ-وَ عَلَى الْمَوْلُوْدِ لَهٗ رِزْقُهُنَّ وَ كِسْوَتُهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوْفِؕ-لَا تُكَلَّفُ نَفْسٌ اِلَّا وُسْعَهَاۚ-لَا تُضَآرَّ وَالِدَةٌۢ بِوَلَدِهَا وَ لَا مَوْلُوْدٌ لَّهٗ بِوَلَدِهٖۗ-وَ عَلَى الْوَارِثِ مِثْلُ ذٰلِكَۚ-فَاِنْ اَرَادَا فِصَالًا عَنْ تَرَاضٍ مِّنْهُمَا وَ تَشَاوُرٍ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیْهِمَاؕ-وَ اِنْ اَرَدْتُّمْ اَنْ تَسْتَرْضِعُوْۤا اَوْلَادَكُمْ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیْكُمْ اِذَا سَلَّمْتُمْ مَّاۤ اٰتَیْتُمْ بِالْمَعْرُوْفِؕ-وَ اتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَ اعْلَمُوْۤا اَنَّ اللّٰهَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُوْنَ بَصِیْرٌ(233)

English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

Mothers should suckle their children for two complete years;[1] ˹this ruling is˺ for one who intends to complete the phase of suckling. The father of the child, in accordance with tradition, has the responsibility of providing food and clothing for women. A life shall only be burdened according to its capability. A mother should not be made to suffer due to her child, and a father should not be made to suffer due to his child;[2] and it is the same ˹ruling˺ for the one who is a representative of the father.[3] Then if both ˹parents˺ decide to wean the child through mutual agreement and consultation, there is no sin on them. And if you want your children to be suckled ˹by other women˺, even then there is no sin on you as long as you pay what you specified with kindness. And fear Allah and know that Allah sees all that you do.

A mother will distress a child through not giving milk on time, not supervising, and abandoning the child after a period of familiarity; and the father will distress the child by taking him away from the mother (when acquainted) or not fulfilling the rights of the mother (upsetting the child).

If the father has passed away, his duties are passed on to his replacement.
