English translation of Kanz-ul-Irfan

Then He sent down upon you, after grief, peaceful sleep[1] which covered a group from among you; and there was a group who were worried about their lives—they were thinking wrongly about Allah, thoughts of ignorance. They were saying, “Do we have any authority in this matter?” Say, “All authority belongs to Allah.” They conceal within their hearts what they do not reveal before you. They say, “If we had some authority in this matter, we would not have been killed here.” ˹Dear Beloved Prophet,˺ Say, “Even if you had been within your homes, those who were destined to be killed would have emerged ˹from their homes˺ and proceeded towards their places of death; and ˹this occurred˺ so that He tests what you have in your hearts and to purify what exists therein; and Allah knows the matters of the heart.[2]

Commentary

[1]

There are a number of lessons in the event mentioned: 1. Genuine and false characters are only recognised when a trial is faced; 2. A Muslim is patient, whereas a hypocrite is impatient; 3. The greatest concern for a Muslim is the religion, whereas the hypocrite is only worried about himself; 4. A believer trusts Almighty Allah in every state and thinks positively about Him, whereas the hypocrite is affected by all kinds of negative assumptions about Allah when he faces a little discomfort;  5. Complete certainty in the Divine Promise is a sign of complete and true faith; 6. There is no escape from death; wherever death is written for an individual, it will surely come to him at that appointed location; 7. Apart from the hypocrites, all the Muslim participants of Uhud were beloved to Allah Almighty.

[2]

Here, Allah Almighty explains the wisdom of the events of Uhud: Whatever transpired tested the sincerity or hypocrisy in hearts so that whatever is concealed in the hearts is revealed to all.
